Formal gardens are built on repetition, which gives a portrait a structure to sit inside: the cypresses hold the vertical, the beds hold the colour, and the subject only has to be the one thing in the frame that is not symmetrical.
Styled to the garden rather than against it. Olive on green sounds like a mistake and works, because the planting is darker and cooler than the clothing and the separation comes from tone instead of hue.
